Dr. CHIU is Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. She received her 7 years medical training at the Tianjin Medical University, People's Republic of China. After getting her Master and Bachelor of Clinical Medicine degree in 1995 in Tianjin. She proceeded with her postgraduate training in Ophthalmology and Visual sciences in the Chinese University of Hong Kong followed by neurosciences at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Supervised by Prof. Kwok Fai So, she received the Ph. D degree in neuroscience in 2008. She joined the department of Ophthalmology as an Assistant Professor in 2014. She has been a principal investigator in department and the state key laboratory of brain and cognitive sciences in HKU. Dr. Chiu proactively explores collaborative opportunities in Hong Kong, China and worldwide. She secured more than 12 million research funds ever since she established her research group which focusing on the retina-brain research.

Research Interests

Dr. Chiu long term research goal is to find a cure for visual loss in neurodegenerative retinal diseases, such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. Her research work focus on neuroprotection, regeneration in models of retinal neurodegeneration. At the same time, she is trying to find retinal imaging biomarkers for central nervous system degeneration.

  • Trans-scleral electrical stimulation in retinitis pigmentosa, retinal vein occlusion, traumatic optic neuropathy, retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury, chronic glaucoma models in mouse, rat and rabbit

  • Immune modulatory effects of the traditional Chinese medicine Lycium barbarum in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and AD-related vision loss

  • Computational retinal microvasculature biomarkers (CRMBs) through a computerized automatic analytical system based on fractal analysis using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images.
