Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness with 80 million patients in 2020 worldwide. False positive and false negative diagnosis of glaucoma, however, remains common in clinical practice. The Glaucoma and Optic Nerve Diagnostics Laboratory designs and applies new algorithms with advanced digital imaging technologies to facilitate early diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma. We are conducting clinical trials to investigate objective and reliable diagnostic paradigms to guide management of patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertensives. Recently, we developed Retinal nerve fiber layer Optical Texture Analysis (ROTA) to unveil the trajectories of the axonal fiber bundles in the retina from optical coherence tomography (OCT) datasets for early and intuitive detection of optic nerve damage in glaucoma, and non-glaucomatous optic neuropathies. A start-up company, AIROTA Diagnostics Limited, supported by Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities, was founded in 2020 to integrate ROTA with deep learning and cloud computing to automate clinical workflow to augment early diagnosis of glaucoma and prevent glaucoma blindness. AIROTA Diagnostics Limited was admitted to the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) Incu-Bio Program in 2020.
