Dr. Chan studied medicine at the University of New South Wales, Australia. On returning to Hong Kong, he worked as a medical officer in ophthalmology at United Christian Hospital, where he completed his ophthalmology fellowship and training in glaucoma under Prof. Jimmy Lai (former Head of HKU Department of Ophthalmology). During his fellowship training, besides the United Christian Hospital, he has also worked at the Hong Kong Eye Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, and Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. He was promoted to associate consultant in ophthalmology at Queen Mary Hospital, in 2008, before eventually taking up his current position at the University of Hong Kong in 2015. Since joining HKU, he has obtained more than HKD 2,000,000 in research grant and funding as principal investigator for conducting research and improving clinical services. He has authored over 60 publications in peer reviewed journals. He is also involved with the training and development of diabetic retinopathy screening in Hong Kong and is the current head of training for the diabetic retinopathy screening programme of the Hospital Authority.
Besides research, Dr. Chan is also dedicated to the teaching and welfare of medical students at HKU, where he has taught in the MBBS programme, as well as taken the role of MBBS Year 1 preceptor, clinical academic advisor, equal opportunity officer, and supervisor for research-based projects such as the Year 3 Health Research Project and the Enrichment Year programme. Dr. Chan is also involved in the training of future ophthalmologists in Hong Kong, being a member of both the Revision Course Organizing Committee and the Training Curriculum Review Committee of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong.
He has also regularly represented the university and his profession as a visiting consultant and invited speaker for various charity and professional organizations, such as the Asian Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness, Lifeline Express, College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society. He was one of the first Hong Kong ophthalmologists to participate in the Asian Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness - Cataract Blindness Eradication Project in Kampong Cham (Cambodia) in 2018, and has also been an honorary clinical instructor for glaucoma procedures at the Liuzhou Red Cross Hospital (Guangxi, China) for 2020.
