Learning through interdisciplinary collaboration and student-patient interactions

2021 HKU Teaching Development Grant

An interdisciplinary program was set up to promote collaboration between medical students and biomedical engineering students to address the unmet needs of visually impaired persons (VIPs). Through this capstone experience, students have enriched their understanding of common eye diseases and their impact on patients’ quality of life, identifying real-life challenges from patients’ perspective. Students also learnt about the assistive devices and services that are available for VIPs through the visits to various NGOs that serve VIPs in Hong Kong.
