Our department would like to send our warmest congratulations to Mr William Wong, MBBS and MRes (Med) Class of 2023 for being one of twenty five awardees for the 2022 Innovation and Technology Scholarship. The award was presented by the Hong Kong Chief Executive at a memorable ceremony on the 6th of June 2022.

William spent his 2019-2020 enrichment year conducting research at the HKU Department of Ophthalmology as an MRes (Med) candidate. He focused on biomedical engineering work under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Chan, Dr. Kendrick Shih and Dr. Amy Lo. His study was the first to report the potential ant-scarring effects of lycium barbarum polysaccharide in a 3D in vitro model of cornea injury. He further discovered that his findings in vitro were translatable to an in vivo animal model of corneal injury. His second project demonstrated the potent would healing effects of 1% lycium barbarum polysaccaride eyedrops on the cornea.
Despite his young age, William has already authored 6 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals, serving as first author for 3 of them. He is an exemplary student, becoming the 6th awardee of this prestigious scholarship to have conducted their research work with our team.
