Department of Ophthalmology receives HK$10 million from Ling Charitable Foundation Limited for glaucoma research programmes

Recognizing the invaluable contribution of our generous donor, Ling Charitable Foundation Limited, towards our mission of advancing the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for prevention and treatment of glaucoma.

With the generous support of the Ling Charitable Foundation Limited (the Ling Foundation), Department of Ophthalmology, School of Clinical Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) is expanding its laboratory and clinical research programmes in glaucoma – the leading cause of irreversible blindness. The Ling Foundation is a critical partner in our work to advance the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for prevention and treatment of glaucoma.

Through the setting up of the George Ling Glaucoma Research Fund with a total of $10 million, the Ling Foundation has enabled us to devise novel ocular imaging technologies to detect optic nerve degeneration at the early stages of glaucoma and develop new treatment approaches to protect and enhance the function of the optic nerve. Under the auspices of the Ling Foundation, new and innovative research programmes have been initiated. These include (1) laboratory studies aimed to identify druggable targets to regenerate the optic nerve; (2) clinical trials exploring novel medical and surgical treatments for glaucoma; and (3) the recently launched HKU x Orbis territory-wide glaucoma screening programme, the “Vision matters: Glaucoma AI-ROTA Screening Project for 50+”.

Professor Christopher Kai-Shun Leung, Chairperson and Clinical Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology, School of Clinical Medicine, HKUMed, said, “We are immensely grateful to the Ling Foundation for recognizing the significance of vision research and for their commitment to support HKUMed Ophthalmology’s fight against glaucoma blindness both in Hong Kong and globally.”

The Ling Foundation makes a meaningful difference in the lives of many individuals and families. Its generosity and vision help advance our shared goals and create positive change in our community.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Ling Foundation and further developing innovative community projects for the betterment of society.
