Through the setting up of the George Ling Glaucoma Research Fund with a total of $10 million, the Ling Foundation has enabled us to devise novel ocular imaging technologies to detect optic nerve degeneration at the early stages of glaucoma and develop new treatment approaches to protect and enhance the function of the optic nerve. Under the auspices of the Ling Foundation, new and innovative research programmes have been initiated. These include (1) laboratory studies aimed to identify druggable targets to regenerate the optic nerve; (2) clinical trials exploring novel medical and surgical treatments for glaucoma; and (3) the recently launched HKU x Orbis territory-wide glaucoma screening programme, the “Vision matters: Glaucoma AI-ROTA Screening Project for 50+”.
