Department of Ophthalmology, HKU Showcases Innovation at the 41st APAO Congress
The Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Hong Kong was proudly featured at the 41st Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress, held from February 5 to 8, 2026, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This prestigious gathering, themed "Eyes on the Future: Innovating Ophthalmology", brought together over 11,500 ophthalmology experts from 111 countries.
Our Exhibition Booth: A Window into Our Work
Our dedicated booth served as a vibrant hub for introducing our department's clinical and research excellence to the global ophthalmic community. We highlighted the HKU Eye Centre as a leading regional center for comprehensive eye care, showcasing our commitment to advancing vision science and patient care.
Hands-On Experience with ROTA
The Department has set up a dedicated ROTA counter at our booth, providing participants with the unique opportunity to experience ROTA firsthand. This interactive station allowed attendees to engage with this innovative ophthalmic technique, gaining practical insights into its applications in vision assessment and therapy. The hands-on experience drew considerable interest from both clinicians and researchers, sparking meaningful discussions on its potential integration into routine eye care practice.
Immersive Experience with Virtual Reality
A major highlight of our booth was the Virtual Reality (VR) experience that allowed participants to step into the world of vision impairment. This interactive exhibit proved immensely popular, giving attendees a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with various eye conditions, fostering greater empathy and awareness.
Introducing Visymulation Pro
We were proud to introduce Visymulation Pro, an innovative augmented reality (AR) mobile application. Designed to educate the public on common visual symptoms, the app allows users to experience conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy through immersive 1-minute AR simulations. Participants at our booth experienced the application, including explore the causes and visual symptoms of over 12 vision problems with adjustable severity levels.
Shaping the Future Together
Our participation in APAO 2026 underscores our commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology—from innovative therapeutic approaches like ROTA — to AR applications and VR experiences to, for both public education and professional advancement. We look forward to building on the collaborations and insights gained at this landmark congress to continue innovating for a brighter future in eye care.
