We are pleased to share an ongoing collaboration between the Southern District Council of Hong Kong SAR and the Department of Ophthalmology, HKU, in enhancing early identification of common ophthalmic diseases in the residents of the Southern District of Hong Kong.

Introduction to the Southern District Eye Examination Scheme:

• Southern District Council has utilised part of its signature project scheme funding, in collaboration with the Department of Ophthalmology of Hong Kong University, to provide a 5-year eye screening program that began in May 2019.

• Qualified ophthalmologists provide a once-only, free of charge eye examination service to residents of the Southern District who are 50 years old or above.

• If further investigation is deemed necessary by the attending ophthalmologist, a referral letter will be issued for follow-up at either a public or private eye specialist clinic.

Why do we provide eye screening?

Many degenerative eye diseases tend to occur as we age. Often, symptoms of eye disease are not easily noticeable. Therefore, eye screening is necessary to detect the presence of eye diseases and initiate appropriate treatment at an early stage. Eye screening can help provide participants with earlier treatment, appropriate medical advice, and further tests to help reduce the risk of complications arising from the eye disease.

Examination services include:

• Height, weight and blood pressure measurement

• Vision and eyesight testing

• Cataract examination

• Glaucoma examination

• Retina and macula degeneration examination

• Cornea and anterior chamber examination

• Specialty examinations as necessary (visual fields/ macula and optic nerve OCT scans/fundus photos)

• Consultation with a qualified specialist ophthalmologist
